Healthy Food Choices
To maintain your health and energy, eat a well- balanced diet, just as any
healthy individual would. The following nutritional guidelines are intended
to help you make healthy eating choices. Speak to your doctor if you have any
questions about your diet.
Protein
Proteins help make muscles, organs, hair and bones, and are considered "building
blocks" of the human body. Fortunately, all the protein you need during lactation
is easily attainable in a balanced diet.
Vitamins and Minerals
Most vitamins are needed in larger amounts during lactation. Breastfeeding
women who get enough calories, however, are likely to obtain all the vitamins
and minerals they need, with the exception of calcium, zinc and possibly iron.
In general, try to get your vitamins and minerals from food rather than supplements,
and choose low-fat foods that contain zinc, calcium and iron. Some doctors may
suggest that mothers continue to take prenatal vitamins throughout lactation.
Ask your doctor if vitamins or supplements are appropriate for you.
NoteSpecial considerations may need to be made for vegetarians,
diabetics and breastfeeding mothers who have other dietary restrictions. Speak
to your doctor about your personal diet and what is best for you.
